Not familiar with the term?
Well, first of all, shame on you.
Second, isn't it obvious? I am a fan of the Manilow. FANILOW.
For my money, he really does write the songs that make the whole world sing.
However, I caught a glimpse of him on the Today show this week, and boy howdy, does he look like he's been saran wrapped.
Even better, I found this fantastic video of him singing Rick Astley's hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up".
He can still sing, bless him, but it looks like he can't really move his face.
(The Man won't let me post it on here, so if you're so inclined, please observe.)
What really disturbs me is that the older he gets, the more he looks like Anne Murray. Lookit:
Which one is which?
You tell me.
On another note, I have given in to the holiday spirit.
My roommates and I got our tree yesterday. The whole experience was far less romantic than I imagined.
In this part of North Carolina, we grow us some pretty bitchin' trees as it turns out.
Look! Nature!
We tromped around the grounds of one such place, assessing height and shape. Having never been in such a place, I was overwhelmed with the fantastic smell and was all but taking hits off the branches.
He was a fatty and we liked him, but alas, too tall.
When we had chosen our tree, someone came and cut it down. With a chainsaw. Then he dragged it away, tossed it on his little cart and drove it to our car.
No pomp. No ceremony. All business.
I was sort of hoping he'd cut it down with an axe, while whistling "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", then pull his corn-cob pipe out of his jacket and smoke it while telling us a story from his childhood.
He did not.
Either way, the tree is up!
Um... it's a little too tall. What to do?
So, what happens when your tree scratches the ceiling? One retrieves one's hatchet, of course!
Yeah, this really happened.
After James killed it and we got it all set up, we decorated.
I named him Hugh.
After that, I made James put his hatchet back in his car. He seemed confused as to why I was so uncomfortable with a MINI AXE IN THE HOUSE.

The soundtrack to Elf is currently in the CD player of my car. It's the next best thing when your mom steals your copy you can't find your copy of the DVD.

You do know, don't you, that the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear?
lol that is the best way to describe manilow. i did not feel the today show was his best performance.
your're a fun writer; i enjoy reading your blog!
your tree looks awesome!
...and I definitely would not like an axe laying around my house, you never know what might happen.
I need to know why your friend has an ax in his car...this is important.
Hi also looks like that one muppet character from Labyrinth.
Your tree looks wonderful! I wish my roommates and I would put up a tree. I think the mini axe would freak me out too.
Nice tree!
Oh, his face - yikes. I guess I hadn't seen him since the last round of surgery... Him and Anne Murray - funny!

Yay a Fanilow! I'm not one but I love people that are:)
Beautiful tree by the way!
Hey there. Here after seeing that Hurstburst has you on her hit list. Felt like making a new friend, and thrilled to be here. Let me introduce myself...I'm a tree cutting, latte drinking, Elf playing, Barry loving Fanilow as well. Nice to meet you! Come on by for some vlog and blog fun at our place. Lifelaughlatte.blogspot.com Don't look now but I'm stalking (er following) you. Holly
Uh, yeah, the corncob and whistling are supposed to be included in the price of the tree.
Seriously, Virginia tree farms know how to handle these things.
The ax in the car *is* a little strange, but I once got pulled over with a butcher knife in my glove compartment, so I'm not in a position to judge.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on your blog! :-)
Manilow rocks. I have a few of his songs on iTunes.
Hurrah! Splendid bit of tree work. Every home shoudl have its festive axe. :)
Nice separated at birth! Where's the video? It would have been so cool to be rick=rolled with Manilow.
oh man this made me laugh on so many levels.
1. of course i know what a fanilow is! though i may not be one, i do concede his music is high up there on my list of all time favorites.
2. taking hits off of the x-mas trees. me too girl, me too. i just got mine and i love the odor filling my room right now.
3. it's not very romantic when there's no snow on the ground and the guy is wearing a t-shirt--doesn't feel quite as holiday-ish!!
you're amazing. keep us laughing, always.
I love your tree! We have a fake one this year..and it's a bummer.
Hi, I'm stopping by from SITS! I wanted to share a bit of comment love. ♥
Your Christmas tree is beautiful! Is it a Fraser Fir? I absolutely love those and we buy one every year. Unfortunately, though, they are not grown here where we live in Georgia, so we have to buy ours already cut. :0( We REALLY want to move a little farther north in a few years, hopefully to the mountains of North GA, TN or NC. It is so beautiful up that way. I am quite envious of you. :0)
Well, I just became your newest 'Follower'. I'd love it if you'd stop by my blog sometime to visit, too. I love to make new bloggy friends! :0)
I hope the rest of your week is absolutely amazing! Take care and have a wonderfully blessed Christmas season!

Why do people do this to their face??? They all end up looking like scary Cabbage-Patch Kids!
I'm not going to talk about Manilow cuz he's just weird looking.
But I can get into Christmas Trees!! Woohoo! We're cutting ours this weekend. The place we go to gives us a saw, and hubs cuts it and we throw it on top of the Explorer and drive home. Last year we had a butt load of snow and it was fantastic...this year is looking pretty brown so far. boo. The first year we got one that was waaaaay too huge. You know, it didn't look that big out in the field, but in our apt it was giant!
Your tree looks great!!
one year my husband cut the top off so much that it was more of a xmas bush - congrats to you on the holiday trimmings and you have now inspired me to write a post on chainsaws and xmas trees
btw, fanilow up top - give it to me did you see him on kathy griffin? it's the queens who care the most.
lastly elf is the best xmas dvd ever - baby it's cold outside
love it
Why does James have a hatchet at all?
The tree looks beautiful!
Barry Manilow and Anne Murray are almost completely the same person.
apologies. I got stuck on manilow's face. nightmare city.
Fanilow or not, Barry must stop with the plastic surgery. Yikes.
But your tree looks great. Why? Because it is all natural! Barry, take note.
good job! I love the tree... I am NOT a fanilow. Though, I don't hate him. I can listen to almost anything.
Except for "Christmas Shoes"
:)
1. There was a soundtrack to Elf? Like, with songs?
2. You have too been out to chop down a Christmas tree before. I was there. As soon as I remember where it was, I'll send some more admonishment your way.
"You smell like beef and cheese. You don't smell like Santa."
Now that your tree is up, you should try to stick to the four elfin food groups. You know what those are, right?
We're decorating our tree this weekend...is it wrong that I'm SO FREAKING EXCITED about this!?!
The Christmas Tree is great, but the mini ax is a bit scary. LOl...
YAY - a fellow Fanilow! :-) I'm now a Following Fanilow. Love your blog!
I was thinking the same thing watching the Today show. I was telling my husband I love him but the man cannot move his mouth anymore. He looks embalmed...and yes somewhat like "Man" Murray...I get made fun of all the time but I am a Fanilow to the end...botox and all!!
Cara
Ha! I loved that you name your tree too! I just posted last weekend about our tree. His name is Arty:)
Love the pic...it's like a couple of weapons from CLUE.
FTR...I watched Elf & Christmas Vacation while decorating & putting up my tree......l-o-v-e Elf.
My dad used to dig the tree out of the ground so we could plant it in our yard after Christmas. Neat, unless you were 5, standing in the freezing cold, watching my dad fight with frozen earth for WAY TOO LONG. There is no romance in Christmas trees - until after they're up anyway.
Oh my, Manilow DOES look like Anne Murray, and I hate to admit that I used to be a Murray fan! I say "used to" because I am no longer forced to sit in the car with my Dad, now I force my own kids to listen to MY music...which just happens to be No Doubt and Greenday- the ONLY cd's I have leftover from my days of reckless freedom...and the occasional Miley...what can I say? Girls DO just wanna have fun!
Hahaha I am NOTTTT a fanilow...
Well, at least he didn't say "Heeere's Johnny" while weilding that hatchet!
and you're right, he does write the songs that make the whole.... you know.
Happy SITS day to you!
sweetjeanette.blogspot.com
You had me at Fanilow!! You know, I've honestly never met another Fanilow in my life. My niece works at a radio station and they were recently giving away concert tickets to see him and she said, "No one has even tried to win the tickets...I guess no one really likes him!". Child say what??!!
I agree that he's looking mighty tightly stretched in the face but thank goodness it didn't change his voice. I have his greatest hits CD in my car and sometimes I put it on and the kids groan. But I just sing along with him!
First time visitor here from Sits. You are friggin riot!!
Will definately be following frm here on out!! Can
t wait to get to know you better!
Barry is looking like Anne Murray. New follower from SITS here, love your blog.
I love Christmas music. I amgoing to have to pick up the soundtrack to Elf. Should be good.
I love that you took the hatchet to the tree. Hugh looks lovely...Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and Jolly Kwanza.
Happy SITS
My god, he does look like her. That's a little alarming. Listening to some christmas song sung by hi (The one with the roasting chestnuts I think...) as I read this. Which was weird...
Sorry to say I think Barry HAS had a little too much work done... I couldn't tell who was Anne.
Also, wondering how much nature you brought inside with your tree? Were there any unwelcome bugs or spiders hiding out? I always wondered if I cut down a fresh tree what I would be bringing in with it. Great blog, SITSta!
It's so pretty!
The axe, I mean.
Juuuust kidding, I meant the tree. Of course.
I have been contemplating whether or not to get a tree...I think you just pushed me over the yes edge :)
Hahaha, a Fanilow. I Love It.
Sooo... I spent like 60 bucks buying Christmas music on itunes before I left Iraq, haha. I Love Christmas.
And guess who's in Indiana.
smile.
I was a Fanilow in my teen years. I still get sentimental when I hear any of his classics - Somewhere In The Night, One Voice, Ships, etc...but yes his face is starting to scare me and certainly others. He needs to stop it! And stop singing Rick Astley songs...but I digress...
