You're funny looking.

A few days ago, Lady Heather of Arizona Lewis threw down the gauntlet with this post.

And I, despite the shrill, whiny noises I make when I see a large, icky bug, am no sissy.

With that in mind, I am here to pay homage to one of my most hated physical flaws.

My selection today, tomorrow and every day after would be the terribly pronounced dark circles that underline my eyes.

It doesn't matter how much sleep I get.

It makes no difference the kind of makeup, moisturizer or cosmetic product I use.

It has nothing to do with what I eat or drink.

They're always there.

I've had people roll their eyes at me and say, "So, cover them up."

God bless it, why didn't I think of that?!

While concealer makes them lighter, nothing gets rid of them.

So, I constantly get bombarded with the following:

"Hey, are you okay?"
"You look really tired."
"Are you sick?"
"Man, how late did you stay up last night?"
"You don't look so good."

It's the same when I'm in a picture. From certain angles, I look like someone straight up punched me in the face.

I know when I take a bad picture, and I don't need anyone to point it out to me... and yet, someone always does.

For example, this picture is from the Summer of 2007. I'm wearing makeup in this picture (and I'm enjoying the Moo Moo Mr. Cow at Moe's!)

Anyway, in the spirit of Madame Lewis, I am doing my darndest to accept this flaw and, maybe someday, embrace it.

I can't say that I like the dark circles yet, but I'm learning to not bite someone's head off when they ask me about them.

Sometimes, I refer to this quote from Will and Grace, because while I'd never say it out loud, it's similar to what runs through my head:

Woman: I think you're awful.
Karen: Oh yeah? Well, I think stretch pants are awful, but I'm too much of a lady to say it, fat ass!

I said I'm working on it!

that so would come out of my mouth... once I was safely in my car and driving away... and then I'd turn around and say ever-so-sweetly to the backseat... "mommy's sorry. we shouldn't say words li- Hey jackass watch where you're going!"

:) I hope you snorted orange juice out of your nose with that one :) have a blessed day.

Dark circles eh? Could be worse. You could have a giant mole on the tip of your nose or something...

Gosh! I never noticed under-eye darkness, and I even zoomed in on your photo. (Yes, I did.) I think it's time for you to embrace the eyes.

My flaw? I can't pick three? I think I'll have to go with the loosey-goosey legs. Whenever I walk, they ripple like a pond after a stone has been cast in. No more shorts for me. Those days are over forever.

amazing.
i love it when people ask me if i'm sick when i'm feeling amazing.
in 2000 i was walking down the sidewalk in nyc when this team popped out from an alley and asked me if i wanted a fun ambush makeover by instyle magazine.
i was super shocked and my only response was in a quiet, shaky voice, "do i really need one".

everyone turned and looked at each other awkwardly and before anyone could say anything, i bolted.

you're so rad.

I went over to Arizona Lewis and enjoyed the post. (She said nipples.)
Now I'm following. (Cuz nipples is funny.)

What if I love her more than I love you and take my creepy comments to greener pastures, hmm?
You'll be sorry is all I'm saying.

I may pick up the gauntlet of this challenge, but the unsightly selection of facial anomolies is so great, that choosing a single humiliating flaw to pretend to embrace may be too difficult for even me.

You're gorgeous. People are rude. Give 'em H when they're so dumb.

i know how you feel! no really- i do.

in gradeschool, teachers used to ask me if someone was hurting me at home cause i always looked like someone had blackened my eyes.

i started using a highlighter pencil/eye shadow in a SMALL amount at the base of the circle-- would do this before and after using concealer. it's supposed to reflect light. sometimes it works- sometimes it looks like i got punched by a glittered fairy. fun, right?

I HATE it when people say, "You look tired!" Who in their lives taught them that this was an appropriate thing to say to anybody? That line can only be used by people who know you extremely well . . .

But I get that a lot. Also, people point out to me when I'm blushing, which makes me blush even more and drives me insane! I CAN FEEL my face get hot; I don't need people to tell me WHAT I ALREADY KNOW!

Phew!

I'm sorry you have persistent under-eye circles. Be grateful you don't have huge feet??? (like me)

I've always heard dark circles under the eyes are hot?! Just like cellulite, aren't men supposed to be attracted to them?

Uh-oh. My information might be wrong.

I think when people tell you that you look tired, that's like one of the five meanest things you could say to a person.

I listened to Carolina this morning and thought of you!

How I miss Karen from Will & Grace!!! Despite her (major!) flaws we all need to channel a little Karen now and then. Great post & thanks for spreading the word about the "embrace your flaws" posting. I just may have to do one of those....

Happy Saturday SITS Sharefest:-)

Yeah that used to happen to me alot and it made me want to punch someone in the mouth. I never did, of course. Mine has gotten alot better in the last few years. I started using mineral makeup which helped a little and started eating better. If all else fails, just hit the next rude %$#!*% that has the nerve to say something. :)

I think I have found a kindred spirit! Enjoyed the post -- I have a similar one of 'what to look forward to' (see my post "Hair Today Gone Tomorrow" -- I look forward to reading more......happy day from a SITStah!

Wear dramatic sunglasses all the time. I do it and don't have dark circles. I just like to stare at weird people.

You're gorgeous, Sara!

AND, you're the recipient of yet another blog award! Stop on by and pick it up.

i agree with deb, you're gorgeous. but in the spirit of this thing (and super impressed by your willingness to embrace) i'm working on loving my big bum. yes, indeedy!

Lizz said...

I have them too. I wear glasses and it helps cover them or distract or something. I tried contacts and I always got the "you look tired" thing too. *sigh*

And no amt or brand of concealer in the world works.

My question is - why do people feel they have to point things out like that. No one is perfect - SO, it think you need to work more on saying wants on your mind not just thinking it! :)

I love your blog and am now following you! Glad I am a SITStah or I would have never found you.

Flaws? Ahhhh, I have shit-tons of them...too many to list...but don't worry...I also have those dark circles under my eyes...

Oooh I'm a Sara without an H toooo!
And guess what else? I have totally awful undereye circles as well. The only thing I've found that masks them is Bare Minerals Bisque powder.
Definitely give it a try if you haven't before! :)
